In the spring of 1819, a younger fellow by the title of Henry Shaw from Sheffield, England landed in the small French village if St. Louis, Missouri. There he established up a business selling components to the settlers that were heading out from the "Gateway to the West." Business was great and he was in a position to retire by the age of forty. Ole Henry would soon turn out to be the largest landowner in the city. He constructed Tower Grove Home, which became his estate, and purchased fairly a bit of land around it.
