In the spring of 1819, a young fellow by the name of Henry Shaw from Sheffield, England landed in the small French village if St. Louis, Missouri. There he set up a company promoting hardware to the settlers that had been heading out from the "Gateway to the West." Company was good and he was in a position to retire by the age of 40.
